Weekend in Montreal

Monday, July 7th, 2008

The Server North team was in Montreal last week adding 3 additional servers to our newest colocation facility. This was the first time I had been to the Canix building and I was very impressed with the professional, top of the line site.

The cascading row of Sun Servers in the Server North rack looks very impressive. We’ve gone quite far since the beginnings in our first rack in the small Toronto facility.

It was nice to be in Montreal during Quebec city’s 400th birthday. Between that and Canada day I was feeling very patriotic that week.

The food in Montreal is just outstanding. I did some shopping on Saint Catherine street. I was disappointed that the H&M store was still under construction. It would have made Danielle so jealous if I came home with a shopping bag from that store. Mike and I next toured harbor front before heading for home.

Net Neutrality

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

I attended the Net Neutrality rally downtown this week. This is the first protest at Parliament Hill that I’ve ever been to. Primarily because it was the first time they have ever been protesting something that I actually cared about.

What is Net Neutrality?
It’s the idea that internet traffic and content should flow freely without interference from those that run the networks. This could be referred to as the high-tech equivalence to freedom of speech.

I was personally there to show support for our smaller Canadian ISPs and help stop the restrictions being put down by the larger industry oligopolies. This can be clearly seen in Bell Canada’s Internet Traffic-Shaping efforts.

There’s Ben front row center showing his support along with about 200 others including ISPs, the media, members of parliament, the general internet using public and the Server North team.

The Server North team and the LHnet guys spent the weekend working in Perth.

Isn’t Geo-Tagging neat?

Check out this great tool called GPicSync. It will synchronize your GPS unit’s track files with the time stamp from your camera. What more could you want?
